RUNNER’S IRISH COFFEE

  1. Go for a run
  2. Get a warm glass
  3. Add hot brew coffee* – choose your favorite local roaster and go with a smooth, medium blend
  4. Add 2 sugar cubes and stir until dissolved
  5. Stir in 1.5 ounce Irish Whiskey** – the Buena Vista in San Francisco uses Tullamore
  6. Slowly pour a heaping tablespoon (maybe a tad bit more) of thick heavy whipping cream.

* Prefer decaf? Great! This works just as well with decaf coffee.
** Make it a non-alcoholic version with Rum Extract.

Did You Know? The Buena Vista began to start serving Irish Coffee on November 10, 1952. Stanton Delaplane, a travel writer for the San Francisco Chronicle, popularized the drink by mentioning it frequently in his travel column. The Buena Vista has served, by its count, more than 30 million of the drinks.

Run Local Zine – San José Edition

START LINES – BY JT SERVICE

My start line was San José. I grew up in the quaint neighborhood of Willow Glen. Way back in the day it was playfully called Goosetown because of the large Italian population that kept geese in their backyards. Now Goosetown is just a great (and I mean GREAT) San José dive bar that is likely hanging by a thread through pandemic policies.

If there was ever a time to Run Local this is it. We need to step up. Every local retail business has been hit hard by the pandemic. But it’s not just for the sake of businesses. This is not charity. This is about history. Uncovering hidden gems and sharing secrets to the delight of your book club. You become the tastemaker.

This issue is all about armchair exploration leading to eventual action. While the pandemic kept us at home, now is the time to scheme our coming out parties. When everything is safe use this guide to learn and find more. Nooks and crannies and antique widgets. Discover artisans and uncover histories not found at the top of the Yelp reviews. Look deeper.

Isn’t this zine supposed to be about running? Sure it is. Now go run to the Berryessa Flea Market and visit thousands of vendors making deals. Run to the dozens of local restaurants featured in our neighborhood FUEL section. Run to local shops including San José Made, Craft Tile or Arakawa Pottery. Run Local and find a NEW WAY to San José.

Congrats to Run Local Ambassadors Brian Kelley & Suzanne Allaire for being the first to complete all 12 distances!

Maintain Core Strength for Maximum Performance

For many, the lifestyle of long hours sitting in front of a computer, coupled with the effects of aging, lead to a deterioration of our core strength. When you move, core muscles are extremely important as they are among the first muscles that sense changes in your body position and center of gravity. Deterioration of these muscles leads to a decrease in smooth and coordinated movements in daily activities for both athletes and non-athletes alike.

Maintaining core muscle strength is important as it:

  • Improves proprioception and balance, improving reaction time
  • Improves posture and lower body strength
  • Improves running form, respiration, and overall efficiency
  • Delays the onset of fatigue during physical activities and helps to prevent injuries

What are the core muscles?

The core muscles encompass not only superficial muscles but also muscles much deeper in the body. They essentially run from the base of the neck to the bottom of the pelvis. They include muscles in the front, back, and sides of the body, such as:

  • Rectus Abdominis (the “six-pack muscles)
  • Lateral Obliques
  • Pelvic Floor Muscles
  • Diaphragm (important for respiration)
  • Intercostal muscles (between the ribs, important for respiration)
  • Erector Spinae (muscles that surround the spinal column)
  • Glutes
  • Hip Flexors

Consistent core training will improve efficiency in movement, prevent injury and improve your running ability. The following video illustrates 2 of the most common core strengthening exercises.
