Lower Body Strength

There is a saying in the fitness community that says you should “never miss a leg day.” It is true that lower body and leg strength will make you a better athlete and runner, but it has an even more important reason. Studies have shown that leg strength is a strong predictor of longevity and good brain function.

In a 2006 study in the Journal of Gerontology, it was found that quadricep strength was a strong predictor of mortality and lifespan. Another study published in 2016 in the Journal of Gerontology indicated that lower body power is also directly related to improved cognitive function as we age, compared to those that are weak in the lower body.

For those that not only run but also include lower body strengthening in their workout routines, you are putting yourselves in a great position to lead a long productive life. Although it is best to begin participating in a strengthening program when young, you will benefit from exercise no matter what decade of life you are in.

To get started on improving your strength now, we have added a lower body strengthening routine. Give it a try!
